Change your mindset, change the game | Dr. Alia Crum | TEDxTraverseCity

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Dr. Crum says the biggest game changer is “YOU, by harnessing the power of your mind.” She explores scientific results that show the influence of the mindset on the body, and how changing the subjective mindset produced different outcomes. Dr. Crum’s work is inspired in part by the placebo effect, and has implications that stretch far beyond the realm of medicine.

Dr. Crum is a professor, psychologist, and researcher investigating how mindsets affect health and behavior.

Dr. Crum’s research focuses on how changes in subjective mindsets—the lenses through which information is perceived, organized, and interpreted—can alter objective reality through behavioral, psychological, and physiological mechanisms. Her work is, in part, inspired by research on the placebo effect, a notable and consistent demonstration of the ability of the mindset to elicit healing properties in the body. She is interested in understanding how mindsets affect important outcomes outside the realm of medicine, in the domains of behavioral health and organizational behavior.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

  1. As a Doctor of Physical Therapy, it’s wild anyone would say exercise is a placebo or that 1/3 didn’t exercise. I would say it’s outdated and old video, Id say not much improvement since then. Not yet at least…

  13. They did a study with rats. Two groups of rats were fed sugar for a set time period but the difference was one set of rats were pet and loved on while fed. The group that was not pet, developed diabetes. The affection receiving group remained healthy.

Interesting examples about the impact of mindset, but she doesn’t tell us HOW to change our mindset.

  33. @LeadersOnPurposePodcast April 15, 2025 at 10:31 am

Alia’s research on mindsets completely transformed how I view my daily activities! That hotel housekeeper study blew my mind same work, different belief, measurable physical changes. I’ve started "reframing" my stressful meetings as opportunities for growth, and honestly, I feel less drained afterward.

  34. Very well put together and project to our audience, I listened to all of it

  35. Tangent .5 cosine squared to .64 then sine .5 cosine squared to .27 is responsible for the use of the doctor title. From the "taking up of serpents" in the "encyclical’. The sequence of cosines is commonly presented as a snake on a stick. Pre humiliation stage intelligence. The same algorithm times .777777777 gives the 1.21 algorithm used for the visual presentation. That is taken care of with the size of our TV screens, as it was in the 118.5 inch by 79 inch proportions of the bathers painting from France.

Our mindset shapes our experiences and physical responses. A study on thoracic surgery patients found that those aware of receiving morphine reported greater pain relief than those unaware, highlighting the power of expectation. Similar effects were seen in anxiety and hypertension treatments. Research on hotel housekeepers showed that believing their work was exercise led to health improvements without behavioral changes. Another study found that perception of food influences metabolism. These findings suggest that mindset affects pain, health, and stress. By shifting our perspective, we can improve well-being and harness the power of our thoughts to shape our reality.

What if I eat some poisoned food and I don’t know so it will not hurt me. 🤔
And for kids they don’t know what’s medicine for and still affect on them.
The conclusion that I don’t understand the conclusion from this.
    Any help?!
